Irish actor Michael Fassbender is one of my favorite actors at the moment. He is an exciting presence on the screen and I look forward to his upcoming movies The Counselor and Twelve Years a Slave in the fall. 2011 was the year I discovered him when I saw his terrific performances in Jane Eyre, X-Men: First Class, Shame and Dangerous Method. He was brilliant in The Hunger and great in Prometheus. I honestly think he has the talent and charisma to stand with the great actors of the past like Brando, Newman and McQueen. And he’s possibly as good as the current greats like Gary Oldman and Daniel Day Lewis. Time will tell.
I started with a dark background wash (mix of burnt umber, ultramarine blue and burnt sienna) and started carving out the light. I find it’s sometimes easier to work this way rather than start with a blank white canvas. In the original photo, he’s smoking but I decided to leave out the cigarette (possibly why I got his lips wrong). Maybe I’ll put it back in. Okay, so the nose is a bit wonky too. I’m still learning!
