100 Portraits – No. 6

I love to paint and I love color. Having said that, there’s something so special about drawing with a pencil. It’s the simplicity, the purity of it… it’s going back to the essence and I guess it always amazes me when something emerges on paper made by simple marks of lead. Here, I worked mostly with 2B and 4B. This is portrait #6, only 94 more to go!

I find what’s interesting about this process is that as soon as I create a piece as I did here in a very traditional manner (pencil and paper, realism), I want to do something else completely opposite of it, something contrary – like a cartoon or caricature or a stylized flat portrait. I don’t know if it’s just my personality to want to do variety or if it’s part of my journey to discover a style/approach/meaning. I envy those people who seem to know exactly what they are doing and have an identifiable style. But I guess everyone is different and as long as I’m having fun and enjoying exploring, that’s all that matters.
